You know those classic movie scenes, the ones where songs proclaim a perfect relationship?
Yeah, that hasn’t happened to me yet.
In fact, as I hold out hope for my Hollywood moment, I’ve been told by those in my inner circle that there are five songs no one will ever sing about me.
Here they are, in no specific order.
“Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran
The key line here is I’m in love with the shape of you. It’s been brought to my attention that this cannot be stated in reference to me, particularly if the view is from the side.
“With or Without You” by U2
The classic chorus, of course, claims I can’t live with or without you. Simple observation suggests that the family might be on board with the first part. In contrast, my absence seems extremely well-tolerated.
“You’re the Inspiration” by Chicago
Perhaps I’m being a little harsh on myself, as the lyrics of this tune have been uttered in my general direction. For example, when I asked my son why he wanted to go so far away for college, he answered with the song title.
“Just the Way You Are” by Billy Joel
- A new wardrobe
- Sufficient hair dye
- Several years in the gym
- A different personality
My wife has said that in the hypothetical circumstance of the above conditions being met, to quote, I love you just the way you are.
“Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey
After my book on Rochester, it was hinted that someone considered referencing this song. After the one on Buffalo, such consideration was taken off the table. And after the one on Syracuse, I noted the song had been deleted from my playlist.
