Screw History and Culture

It wasn’t my idea to screw history and culture—Royal Caribbean said it was okay.

And don’t blame them either—they were just doing what Americans wanted.

It’s always been a problem, this whole thing about traveling to the Caribbean region.

Everyone loves warm weather, clear water, and beaches. But the rest can get a little dicey.

Do Americans really have to interact with the people who live on the islands?

Some of them are poor.

Some don’t even speak proper English.

And some of them think they can use the same beaches!

The whole thing is rather ridiculous, especially when these people think we might be interested in their history and culture.

Everyone knows that Americans deserve the upside without being subjected to the baggage that comes with the natives.

That’s where Royal Caribbean stepped in.

After merging with Admiral Cruises in 1988, the company assumed the lease for the Bahamian island called Little Stirrup Cay. And then the Americans put their foot down—these countries shouldn’t have the right to choose their own names. Going forward, the island would be known as CocoCay.

But the place was far from perfect. It had history and culture, and it lacked the authentic—things like waterparks, zip lines, and man-made lagoons.

In 2019, the company took care of that, investing heavily in the island and rebranding it as Perfect Day at CocoCay.

The key, they noted, was to complement the above with genuine Bahamian experiences, namely hot dogs, cheeseburgers, and soft-serve ice cream.

They knew the capital city of Nassau had a popular Straw Market riddled with problems, the most glaring being people who live in Nassau and expect payment in an actual currency.

As such, Perfect Day at CocoCay provided its own version of the Straw Market, devoid of Bahamians and equipped to accept room charges.

The ultimate goal, of course, was an immersive Bahamian experience, just without all the painful history and culture. Even better, more of the money spent would go to the American company rather than the irritating locals.

As the name suggests, only one word comes to mind:

Perfect.
