Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Malaysia on February 7–8, 2026, marked a significant advancement in the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations.

The visit resulted in the exchange of 11 key documents and the announcement of several major initiatives.

  • Semiconductor Cooperation: An Exchange of Notes to strengthen the semiconductor value chain.
  • Digital & Financial: Establishment of bilateral payment linkages between NPCI International (NIPL) and PayNet Malaysia, enabling cross-border QR-based payments.
  • Security & Defense: Agreements on UN Peacekeeping cooperation, national security council engagement, and the creation of a Strategic Affairs Working Group (SAWG) and a Su-30 Forum for aircraft maintenance.
  • Social Security: A pact between India’s ESIC and Malaysia’s PERKESO to coordinate benefits for Indian citizens working in Malaysia.
  • Healthcare: MoUs on traditional medicine, including the deployment of Ayurveda experts and a research pact between the University of Cyberjaya and India’s Central Council for Research in Homeopathy.
  • Wildlife Conservation: Malaysia officially joined the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA).
  • Other Domains: Signed agreements on disaster management, anti-corruption efforts, audio-visual co-production, and vocational training (TVET).

  • New Diplomatic Mission: Announcement of a new Indian Consulate General in Malaysia.
  • Educational Ties: Establishment of a dedicated Thiruvalluvar Centre at Universiti Malaya and the launch of Thiruvalluvar Scholarships for Malaysian students to study in India.
  • OCI Liberalisation: Extension of Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card eligibility to Malaysian citizens of Indian origin up to the sixth generation.

  • Trade in Local Currency: Both leaders committed to promoting the use of the Indian Rupee (INR) and Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) for bilateral trade settlement.

  • Anti-Terrorism: A joint commitment to “zero tolerance” against terrorism and cross-border crime.
