BLUE SPARROW MISSILE: ISRAEL’S’ ADVANCED AIR LAUNCHED BALLISTIC MISSILE
Why in News?
- Reports suggest that Israel used the Blue Sparrow missile in a strike on Tehran on 28 February 2026, which led to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
- The strike occurred during the US–Israel–Iran conflict, highlighting the role of advanced missile technologies in modern warfare.
WHAT IS THE BLUE SPARROW MISSILE?
- The Blue Sparrow is an air-launched ballistic missile developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, an Israeli defence company.
- Key features:
- Part of the Sparrow missile family
- Designed primarily as a target missile for missile defence testing
- Used to simulate enemy ballistic missile threats
- The Sparrow missile family includes:
- Blue Sparrow
- Black Sparrow
- Silver Sparrow
PURPOSE OF THE SPARROW MISSILE FAMILY
- These missiles were originally developed to test Israel’s Arrow Missile Defence System.
- The Arrow system is designed to:
- Detect incoming ballistic missiles
- Intercept and destroy them before they reach their targets
- The Sparrow missiles act as practice targets, allowing the Arrow system to train against realistic missile threats.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION
Important technical details:
- Length:51 metres
- Weight: Around 1,900 kg
- Propulsion: Single-stage solid rocket motor
- Navigation: Dual GPS and Inertial Navigation System (INS)
What is INS (Inertial Navigation System)?
- INS is an internal guidance system that:
- Tracks the missile’s movement and direction
- Works without external signals
- This allows the missile to remain accurate even when GPS signals are disrupted.
HOW THE BLUE SPARROW MISSILE WORKS?
- The missile follows a ballistic flight path.
- Step-by-step process:
- The missile is released from a fighter aircraft at high altitude
- It accelerates upward into the upper atmosphere
- After reaching peak height, the front section separates
- The separated section, called the Re-entry Vehicle, falls toward the target
- The re-entry vehicle uses small thrusters to maintain its course and accuracy.
WHY THE MISSILE IS DIFFICULT TO STOP?
- The Blue Sparrow missile becomes difficult to intercept due to its steep descent trajectory.
- Most air defence systems are designed to detect threats:
- Approaching from the horizon
- Moving at angled trajectories
- However, the Blue Sparrow’s near-vertical drop from high altitude gives very little reaction time to defence systems.
- This makes interception extremely challenging.
CONNECTION WITH REAL BALLISTIC MISSILES
- The Blue Sparrow is designed to imitate real missiles used in warfare, such as:
- Shahab missiles
- SCUD missile series
- Because of this similarity, it is useful for testing missile defence systems under realistic conditions.
ROLE IN THE US-IRAN-ISRAEL CONFLICT
- During the 28 February 2026 strike on Tehran:
- Israel launched a pre-emptive military strike
- The operation was reportedly coordinated with the United States
- The operation was named:
- Operation Roaring Lion by Israel
- Operation Epic Fury by the United States
- Following the attack, Iran declared 40 days of national mourning.
EVOLUTION INTO ADVANCED COMBAT MISSILES
- Technology from the Blue Sparrow missile was later used to develop a more advanced weapon called ROCKS.
- Features of the ROCKS Missile
- Highly precision-guided missile
- Can hit targets even when GPS signals are jammed
- Effective against surface and underground targets
- Works day or night and in all weather conditions
- Warhead capacity: Up to 500 kg
- Accuracy: Within about 3 metres of the target.
CONCLUSION
The Blue Sparrow missile is an advanced air-launched ballistic missile system originally designed for missile defence testing under Israel’s Arrow programme. However, its advanced ballistic flight profile, high speed and precision guidance systems make it extremely difficult to intercept. The missile’s technology has also contributed to the development of modern precision strike weapons, reflecting the rapid evolution of missile technology in contemporary warfare.
