Confessions of a Rochester Obsessive

As a Rochester obsessive, you’re guaranteed that at least 99.7% of the country won’t give a sh*t about what you have to say.

I’ve confirmed the findings of the math (1.1 million divided by 340 million) on multiple occasions, usually starting with an offer to show a visitor around.

Reactions vary, though a common response is uh, no thanks. The few that have agreed have typically fallen asleep and/or thanked God for not living here. One, who was an atheist insomniac, asked if we could head home so he could take his antidepressant.

Of course, the scientist in me realizes that real proof cannot lie in a handful of anecdotes.

That’s where the blog comes into play, providing the ability to pump out hundreds of articles and then assess the response.

Let’s just say that few have found reason to question my conclusions.

To silence the one lingering naysayer who wondered about the reach of the blog, I even tossed a book on Amazon, whose reach cannot be denied.

The Essence of Rochester, New York (paperback version)

The data is now considered just plain fact: No one cares.

But as a Rochester obsessive, such figures are best reserved for the academics. In other words, these numbers cannot be expected to change behavior.

That’s why when the rest of the world is discussing wars, ceasefires, tariffs, free speech, and authoritarianism, I can be found in the depths of a search engine or large language model looking for new material that 99.99% (1.1 million divided by 8.1 billion) of Earth’s citizens will be excited to ignore.

The other day was one of my most productive, keeping in mind that such productivity is inversely correlated with monetary and household value.

After many sedentary hours and clicks of the mouse, I stumbled across this piece in the Daily Mail, a conservative UK tabloid that has been criticized for poor fact-checking:

Under-the-radar US city where Wegmans started becomes affordable hotspot with a booming job market

There were mentions of a sizzling real estate market, elite universities, culture, nightlife, and authenticity.

You can go from downtown to a hiking trail, a jazz concert, or a lakefront view in ten minutes, said a local realtor.

Of course, this type of flattery will never satisfy a true Rochester obsessive.

I continued to sit and click, bypassing the nonsense about snow, crime, and per-capita GDP.

Finally, I found what I was looking for, courtesy USA TODAY 10BEST:

10 best small airports in the US that help you avoid stress and crowds

Never mind that other places on the list included Wichita and Warwick (RI). This was the third year in a row that the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) made the cut! I mean, who can’t get behind a glowing, iridescent solar canopy and an improved security checkpoint?

As I continued to scroll, my wife suddenly came home after a full day of work.

I immediately recognized the longing look, that of Florida and the Telugu businessman her parents had told her to marry.

Prepared, I flipped to our stock portfolio, making sure to cover up the KODK.
